MARIETTA — After a pared down version last year due to COVID, the Washington County Fair returned with a full slate of fun family activities, sights and sounds over the weekend.

Saturday's festivities kicked off with the annual Fair Parade, in which a variety of local bands, organizations and trucks traveled a parade route which began at Ohio and Third streets and continued through to the Washington County Fairgrounds, tossing out candy to children along the way. Bailey Slaughbaugh of Walker, W.Va., and her mother had traveled to Marietta specifically to watch the parade and for her to gather candy Saturday morning.

Saturday through today, the fair scheduled multiple shows every hour from noon until 4 p.m. to entertain the family, including the Magic of Eli, a young magician doing slight-of-hand tricks for the crowd, and Mr. Puppet, a puppet and ventriloquist act, at the tent outside the Junior Fair building. There is also a petting zoo available with all sorts of animals, including a miniature horse, donkey, sheep, goats and more.

A large aspect of the fair included animal judging – which runs Saturday through Monday, culmulating in the livestock sale at 4 p.m. Tuesday, as well as flower judging and home arts judging.

"It's always nice to come to fair," said Suzy Parker, who was one of the flower judges on Saturday. She has been a member of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs since 1976 and is the Immediate Past President. "There are so many nice displays and creative designers."

Two sweets-related contests – a cake-eating contest, which was held at 1 p.m. Saturday through today, and a youth cake decorating contest held Saturday night.

At the inaugural cake-eating contest on Saturday, Olivia Vessels beat out 7 other competitors to take the trophy. Sponsored by the Soaring Eagles 4-H Club with cake provided by the Village Cakery, contestants had only a few minutes to eat all of the cake in their container, not using their hands.

The youth cake decorating contest had 6 contestants in a variety of age groups competing for prizes donated by Pampered Chef and Jo Ann Fabrics. Jeremy Barth, manager at Jeremiah's Coffee House, cake decorator and 4-H advisor, served as judge for the competition, choosing the best decorated cupcake in the under 8 group, and the best decorated traditional cake in the 8-12, 13-15 and 16-18 age group, with decoration themes running from mermaid, seashore, owl, a shaped turtle and flowers. In the cupcake category, 1st place was awarded to Adalyn Seaman and 2nd to the youngest competitor, Kenna Roush. In the 8-12 category, 1st place went to Therese Schmidt with her owl-themed cake and 2nd place to Kaydence Roush with her seashore cake. In the 13-15 category, Aubrey McKenzie had her shaped turtle cake awarded 1st and in the 16-18 age group, Felicity Schmidt had her floral cake take 1st.

The grandstand hosted at tractor pull Saturday night, a rodeo Sunday night, and will have a tribute band tonight at 6 p.m. with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Although Sunday was rainy all day, the crowds still showed up.

Families and community members crowded into the barns to support the 4-H rabbit and goat shows, kids competed in contests, enjoyed shows, rode rides and played games.

Many awards were also handed out throughout the day.

"This is my first year sewing a project in 4-H," said Gracie Morris, who was able to show off her outfit Sunday afternoon in the Style Show.

Morris, who made a skirt, was able to represent the Washington County Fair in the State Competitions for 4-H projects, and at the fair Sunday, was awarded the "Sew excellent" award sponsored by Joanns Fabric.

The awards in projects and livestock were all presented to the children by members of the Junior Fair Royalty.

"One of our duties as fair royalty is to hand out the fair awards," said Fair Princess Julia Hartline, who is also a member of 4-H. "This is my favorite part, because I know these kids and I know how hard they have worked, so getting to not only be there, but to be able to personally present them with these awards is like a proud big sister moment."

This morning, from 8-10 a.m., the 4-H Pancake Flippin' Breakfast and Show will be held at the Junior Fair Building, with donations accepted for the 4-H program.
